Before you hire anyone for ChatGPT or Google, check three things yourself: who ChatGPT names in three towns you serve, whether the number it prints for you reaches your office, and what your marketing team changed last month. October made the phone check urgent. In the Cheers Market Baseline, our own research panel, 12.6% of US ChatGPT local answers carried a phone number in the week of Oct. 2, 2026; for the rest of October, 92.5% did.
Last verified: November 1, 2026.
Start today. Open ChatGPT in a temporary chat and ask what a homeowner would ask ("best [trade] in [town]") for three towns you serve. Write down the date, who it names, the sites it cites and, if it names you, the number it prints, then call it and see who picks up.
Each answer below is short, and every number in it carries its date. They fall in five groups:
- Questions to ask a marketing agency about ChatGPT and Google
- How will we know it's working?
- How ChatGPT and Google pick a business
- Reviews: what Google allows
- AI that calls, books and shops, added this fall
The table below has each number with its window and source, as of Nov. 1, 2026.

Questions to ask a marketing agency about ChatGPT and Google
Settle these before you sign with anyone, us included. A vendor doing real work can show it in writing, with dates.
Should a vendor do the work, or just tell us what to fix?
A report that shows where you're missing changes nothing until someone edits the listing, publishes the page or fixes the directory entry. Ask who makes each change and how fast, then ask for last month's list by date (pages published, profile edits, listings fixed, review replies), kept apart from rankings and reports.
Do we need an AI search vendor on top of our SEO agency?
You need someone accountable for the work across Google, Maps and AI answers. Google's guide to its generative AI features in Search (updated July 10, 2026) says they're rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, so good SEO work carries forward. Add engine-specific source checks, local answer tracking and the profile, review and page work those checks uncover. Cheers brings that work together as a done-for-you service; why SEO work still counts for Google's AI features covers what to measure.
If we switch website companies, do we lose calls or tracking?
A planned cutover protects the calls and tracking the old site already delivers. Get a written cutover plan before anyone touches the domain: keep working URLs, redirect moved pages to relevant replacements and use 404 or 410 for removals with no replacement, carry over your analytics and call-tracking tags, test every form and phone number before the switch, and leave the old site live until the new one passes.
Can't we do this ourselves with ChatGPT or Claude?
You can run the checks yourself, and you should. An assistant can draft a page or a review reply, but someone still has to make each edit, check that it went live, fix each directory entry and repeat it next month for every location. Spend the hours it saves on what only you have: warranty terms, your real service area, photos and notes from finished jobs.
How do we make the case to partners or the franchisor?
Bring what a partner can check without trusting anyone's summary: dated screenshots of who ChatGPT and the Map Pack name in three of your towns, and the monthly report you'll hold the work to, with dated changes, signals and booked jobs in separate columns.
We're buying a contractor. What should we check?
Run the same checks on the target before close: who ChatGPT and the Map Pack name in its towns, whether the number AI prints reaches its office, who owns its Google profiles and website, and how it got its reviews. Customer incentives for reviews and asks sent only to happy customers both break Google's policy. Employee attribution and recognition are different; check that the program uses neutral invitations without staff review quotas. Anything unresolved, like a profile nobody at the company can log into, goes on the closing checklist.
How will we know it's working?
Agree on the report before the work starts.
What should we measure?
Three columns: dated changes, visibility and enquiries (calls, direction requests and AI answers that name you), and booked jobs. Together they show what the team delivered, how customers found the business and which opportunities became revenue.
Can we track leads from ChatGPT?
Yes. Combine website referral data with call and booking records, and label known tracking gaps. Sistrix's logged-out sample (Johannes Beus, Oct. 30, 2026) found every ChatGPT source link carried a utm_source tag set to chatgpt.com through Oct. 8, then only 1% to 24% a day from Oct. 9 to 15 and 42% on Oct. 16. Since Oct. 17, 99% to 100% have.
Sistrix found ChatGPT switched to a building-block layout overnight on Oct. 8 to 9, and links in that layout pass no referrer, so untagged visits show up as Direct. Any report that sorts visits by tag or referrer undercounts ChatGPT for Oct. 9 to 16; mark those dates before anyone reads ChatGPT's share of your traffic.
Calls from the numbers ChatGPT prints carry no tag at all, so add "an AI assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, other)" to your how-did-you-hear-about-us list.
How long does it take?
Start with the changes the team can ship and verify, then review visibility and enquiries over comparable weeks. Its help page (read Nov. 1, 2026) says a profile edit can take up to 3 days to appear and a new business up to a month to show in rankings, and those are display delays, not a schedule for results.
AI answers move week to week. In the Cheers Market Baseline, ChatGPT repeated 57.7% of the same names for the same question and city a week later (US and Canada, Aug. 31 to Sept. 20, 2026, before its October layout change), so judge a trend over several weeks, not one answer, as how long GEO takes to work lays out.
How ChatGPT and Google pick a business
ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode lean on different sources, so check both, and start with Google.
Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps or ChatGPT?
Verification is needed to manage a Business Profile, but an unclaimed public listing may already exist. Check public visibility and suspension status separately (Find your business on Google). Google's general one-profile-per-business rule has exceptions, including eligible departments and individual practitioners (representation guidelines). If the profile is live, ask ChatGPT the homeowner's question in three towns you serve, because being known by name isn't the same as being picked.
Do homeowners really use ChatGPT to find contractors?
Yes. AI recommendations are becoming a normal part of choosing a local business. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 (Feb. 11, 2026) found that 45% of 1,002 US adults had used AI for local business recommendations in the past year, up from 6% in 2025.
How do we get ChatGPT to recommend us?
Keep your Google listing complete, publish the facts only you have on your own site, earn reviews steadily, and get listed correctly on the sites ChatGPT cites for your trade. The long version is our guide to getting ChatGPT to recommend your business; its numbers come from Aug. 31 to Sept. 20, before ChatGPT's Oct. 9 layout change, so this page's October figures are newer.
ChatGPT knows us. Why doesn't it pick us?
Knowing and recommending are different tests. In the Cheers AI visibility grader (Mar. 17 to Oct. 30, 2026), ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity described the business in 96% of answers that asked about it by name but named it in 39.7% of answers to buyer questions. Under the questions we've used since Sept. 24, that rose to 49.4%, about half. Your three-town check, or Cheers' free AI visibility check, shows who it picks instead.
Does AI list fewer companies for emergencies?
On ChatGPT, for some urgent jobs. In the Cheers Market Baseline, ChatGPT named 3.22 businesses on average for a furnace that stopped working from Oct. 9 to 31, 2026, against 4.97 on other HVAC questions; for a burst or frozen pipe it was 3.02 against 5.08 on other plumbing questions. If you take emergency work, add an urgent question to your three-town check.
Do we need to check every town we serve?
Start with the towns that pay. A homeowner in a suburb asks about the suburb, and each engine answers town by town, so a strong showing near your office says little about the next town over.
Is this just about Google?
Far from it. In October 2026, Angi or HomeAdvisor appeared among the sources of 69.4% of US ChatGPT answers in the Cheers Market Baseline that listed any source, Expertise.com in 63.8%, Yelp in 30.3%, Thumbtack in 29.9% and the BBB in 20.1%. The review sites ConsumerAffairs (41.7%) and Birdeye (33.4%) and the best-in-city list sites BestProsInTown (35.3%) and ServiceAgent.ai (32.4%) showed up too. Google's AI Mode leaned on google.com instead, among the sources of 67.2% of its US answers with sources.
Look your business up on Angi or HomeAdvisor, Expertise.com, Yelp, Thumbtack and the BBB; an old address or missing listing there is a fix you can make this week.
Is the Map Pack still worth it if people use AI?
Keep working it. In the Cheers Market Baseline, Google's AI Mode showed place cards, Google's own business listings, in 93.0% of US local answers from Oct. 9 to 31, 2026. Your Google listing remains a prominent part of the customer experience in AI Mode.
A competitor with fewer reviews can still beat you in the Map Pack, because Google says local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity" (Google's local ranking tips, read Nov. 1, 2026) and reviews are only part of the last one. The same page says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
ChatGPT gets our details wrong. What do we do?
Fix the source it reads, starting with your Google listing and the directories it cites, then check the number it prints for you. Of the US numbers ChatGPT printed in October 2026 that we could check against the business's own website, 17.6% weren't on the site, and none of the confirmed nonmatches matched the single-digit or transposition errors we checked.
A number missing from your site can still be a tracking line, an old number or another branch's line, so call it before you change anything. Then search for the number to find the listings that carry it and fix those (fixing what ChatGPT says about your business).
Do we need SEO, GEO or AEO?
The work underneath is largely shared: the listing, the site, the reviews and the directories. What differs is the scoreboard. SEO counts rankings and clicks, while GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) count whether AI answers name you and cite your pages, so pay for the work once and ask for both scoreboards.
Reviews: what Google allows
Google's rules, as its Maps user-contributed content policy states them on Nov. 1, 2026.
Can we give customers a gift card for a review?
Google's policy bars offering incentives "such as payment, discounts, free goods and/or services" for reviews, so a gift card is out. Asking only the customers you expect to be happy is out too, so ask every customer.
Can we ask customers to mention the city, the service or the tech?
Google says merchants shouldn't solicit reviews with specific content, "including content that identifies a staff member." Take any requested wording out of your review asks and leave the words to the customer.
AI that calls, books and shops (added this fall)
We believe everyone will eventually have a superintelligent chief of staff that researches choices and gets things done on their behalf. Home-service businesses should prepare for that customer now. Google's calling and research tools and Meta's Muse already use the phone, forms and booking paths businesses run today.
Google's own automated calls and texts come with three switches. Open Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings, then "Google automated calls and text messages," and you'll find "Bookings and inquiries from customers," "Keep your profile up to date" and "Post to your profile on your behalf" (Google Business Profile Help); for each one, you choose whether Google's AI may contact you or act on your profile.
Google says its automated calls for bookings, wait times and price checks aren't available in Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana or Nebraska (Business Profile Help, read Nov. 1, 2026). That help page doesn't mention Gemini Call for Me, which has its own opt-out, one phone number at a time, on Google's Gemini calling opt-out page.
Should we give a price when an AI calls?
Decide before it happens, and give the AI what you'd give the homeowner behind it: the trip or diagnostic fee, a range and what moves it, and the next opening. TechCrunch reported Google's test of Gemini Call for Me on Sept. 24, 2026; Google says Gemini starts every call by disclosing that it's an AI assistant from Google calling on a recorded line, and the call comes from the customer's own number. Meta hasn't said how Muse introduces itself, so have your CSRs ask any caller that sounds automated whether it's an AI and who it's calling for.
Google's current AI Mode guide, checked November 2, 2026, explicitly includes researching home services such as electricians, tree cutting and exterior cleaning. It describes gathering web information, completing forms and calling businesses for details. Make prices, service areas and availability easy to find, and give callers a useful answer when the job needs a conversation.
What is Meta Muse, and will it send us jobs?
It's Meta's personal AI agent. Meta launched Muse on Sept. 8, 2026, and its beta for calls to US businesses expanded on Sept. 16, in an X post by Ryan Fox that TechCrunch reported the next day; by Sept. 18 it was the No. 1 free iPhone app in the US. Sensor Tower estimates more than 10.2 million US downloads in its first 40 days, through Oct. 17 (PPC Land, Oct. 21), as an early sign of interest in personal agents.
Muse fills in forms, so for now it reaches you through your website's forms and your phone line. Try your own quote form on a phone this week.
Will AI agents book jobs for homeowners?
Yes, and the tools are already taking on parts of that work. Gemini Call for Me, rolling out to eligible US Pixel 11 users, can request service quotes and book or confirm appointments by phone. Google's AI Mode can research home services and contact businesses for details; its separate AI pricing-check flow returns quotes for the customer to book. Prepare the phone response, quote form and scheduling page so an assistant can move the job forward through whichever path it uses.
Start with the missing-visibility diagnostic if your business does not appear at all.
Use the monthly SEO delivery scorecard to ask for dated changes, search uptake and booked jobs in separate columns.
The website migration checklist turns that cutover plan into checks for URLs, forms, phone numbers and analytics.
Method
Questions. We wrote these questions from what home-service owners ask about ChatGPT and Google, in plain words.
Cheers AI visibility grader. The grader sends its questions to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity through each company's developer API, not the consumer apps. Web search is on for every question: ChatGPT runs its web search tool, Gemini grounds its answer in Google Search, and Perplexity searches the web by design. Each engine gets the same short instruction to answer the way a helpful assistant would for a real buyer, to name only real businesses and to say when the evidence is thin.
For each business we ask four buyer questions built from its category and city (for example, "Who are the best [trade] companies in [city]?") and one question that names the business and asks what customers say about it; until early October, that question asked what customers praise or complain about. Every question goes out as a fresh request with no signed-in user, chat history or personalization, and we store the answer text and cited links exactly as returned.
Since September 23, ChatGPT and Perplexity also get the business's city as the asker's approximate location, and in late September we reworded the buyer questions. From March 18 to June 8, ChatGPT answered the four buyer questions for about a third of businesses in one combined request, a method we've retired.
API answers can differ from what a signed-in person sees, since the apps add map cards, phone numbers and listings. Engine models change over time; this sample spans March 17 to October 30, 2026, Pacific time.
About 7 in 10 of the 455 graded businesses are home-service companies, and all chose to be graded. The 96% is 1,311 of 1,364 by-name answers, and "described" doesn't mean described accurately. The buyer-question shares are 2,166 of 5,456 answers overall and 403 of 816 under the questions we've used since Sept. 24.
Cheers Market Baseline. Every week our research panel asks ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini the same 32 home-service questions in 100 metro areas, 60 in the US and 40 in Canada. Its numbers on this page are US-only unless marked "US and Canada."
The October phone and place-card shares come from 1,910 US answers per engine for Oct. 2 to 8, 2026 and 6,307 for Oct. 9 to 31, when 5,835 ChatGPT answers carried a phone number. The 57.7% repeat rate comes from our Aug. 31 to Sept. 20, 2026 analysis of all 100 metros. Citation shares count only answers with captured sources (8,100 ChatGPT and 8,179 Google AI Mode answers, Oct. 2 to 31) and show which sites appeared, not why an engine picked a business. The emergency comparison counts businesses named per answer within the same trade, in answers where we could read ChatGPT's list; the rest are left out, not counted as zero.
The phone check sampled 900 numbers from 772 ChatGPT answers in the US and Canada, Oct. 2 to 31, 2026, and compared each on Nov. 1 with the pages we checked on the business's own website; shares here are US-only. A US number counted as checkable when its site was readable and showed a phone number, setting aside toll-free numbers and one card that linked a directory; 374 were. The share missing from the site was 41.0% (32 of 78) where the site ran a call-tracking script and 12.1% (34 of 280) where it didn't. A missing number can still be a working tracking line, and we didn't dial them.
The grader and the Cheers Market Baseline are separate studies, and we never compare their numbers. Each table row carries its own window. When we change a row, we re-date it.
