Garage door companies get recommended by ChatGPT through the directories it reads and by Google AI Mode through their own website and booking link; the two routes barely overlap. On the question "who are the best garage door repair companies?", ChatGPT cited a garage door company's own website in 13.3% of its answers and never linked a booking page, while Google AI Mode cited company websites in 90.0% of its answers and linked an online booking page in 31.3% (Cheers Market Baseline, August 31 to September 20, 2026). ChatGPT's answers leaned instead on Expertise.com (57.0%), Angi or HomeAdvisor (47.0%) and BBB (46.0%).

For a garage door brand with branches in 20 or 60 markets, those are two jobs with two different owners. The directory listings usually sit with marketing. The booking link sits with whoever edits the Google Business Profiles, and Google doesn't let you set it in bulk. This guide covers both, then what the answers said about speed, reputation and the national brands in this trade. To see one of your own branches this way first, put it through the free AI visibility check.

Important

Garage door repair is one question in our data, asked weekly in 100 metros: 1,196 answers across four engines. ChatGPT's garage door rating data was too thin to publish, so the ratings here come from Google AI Mode and Gemini.

Slope chart comparing ChatGPT and Google AI Mode on garage door repair: company websites cited in 13.3 percent of ChatGPT answers against 90.0 percent on Google AI Mode
On the garage door repair question, ChatGPT cited directories and Google AI Mode cited company websites and booking pages, two routes that barely overlap.

Two engines, two routes to the same repair call

The chart at the top sets ChatGPT against Google AI Mode on the same question. ChatGPT's 13.3% own-site rate was the lowest of the seven trades we've written these guides for; roofing, the next lowest, was 17.8%. Google AI Mode cited Expertise.com in none of its garage door answers, the list ChatGPT cited most. BBB was the other surprise: ChatGPT cited it in 46.0% of its garage door answers, against 14.5% of its answers across all 32 questions.

Gemini and Perplexity sat closer to Google AI Mode on company websites. Gemini cited them in 81.3% of the garage door answers where we captured its citations and Perplexity in 95.3%, though Perplexity also cited Expertise.com in 48.3% and BBB in 31.4%.

Garage door company sites got cited mostly at the homepage (52.1% of those citations), then at location pages (20.6%) and pages naming both the service and the city (15.2%). Review and testimonial pages drew 2.4%, more than three times their 0.7% share across all trades. Small, but in this trade a page of customer stories got cited.

For a multi-location brand, the takeaway is to check the Expertise.com, Angi and BBB pages for every metro you serve, because on ChatGPT those pages are most of the answer, and to treat the Business Profile, its website link and its booking link as the Google AI Mode half of the same job. The Cheers home services program tracks the cited sources and the profile data for each branch in one place.

The question never says emergency. The answers talk about round-the-clock service anyway, which puts hours and same-day cutoffs on the list of facts every branch should publish.

Cheers Market Baseline, August 31 to September 20, 2026: answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode to 32 home-services questions in 100 US and Canadian metros. Mentions of 24/7, 24-hour, round-the-clock or after-hours service anywhere in the answer text.

Google AI Mode74.3% (48.0% across all 'best X for Y' questions)
Perplexity55.7% (41.9% across all 'best X for Y' questions)

The question never says emergency, but the answers talked as if it did. Gemini mentioned 24/7 or after-hours availability in 82.3% of its garage door answers, ChatGPT in 76.0%, Google AI Mode in 74.3% and Perplexity in 55.7%. Across all the "best X for Y" questions we ask, the same engines mentioned it in 60.7%, 34.4%, 48.0% and 41.9% of answers, and on true emergency questions in 93% to 99%. Same-day repair came up in 62.0% of Gemini's garage door answers, 57.0% of Google AI Mode's and 46.0% of ChatGPT's.

Google treats the trade the same way. Its Local Services Ads rules say "The garage door category is considered an urgent category because consumers often call garage door professionals for time-sensitive, urgent needs, such as a garage door that won't open or close." Garage door providers get service professional background checks plus Google's Advanced Verification, a step the same page applies to locksmiths but not to electricians, HVAC or plumbing, which get the background checks alone. The electrician guide shows how that urgent label plays out in another trade's answers.

So publish speed the way dispatch actually runs it. Google's profile guidelines ask for your "regular customer-facing hours of operation," which means a branch that truly dispatches overnight can say so on its profile and one that doesn't shouldn't borrow the brand's 24/7 line. On each branch page, say whether same-day spring and opener repair is offered, until what time, and in which parts of the service area. The answers describe the work in exactly those terms: springs came up in 99.3% of ChatGPT's garage door answers and openers in 98.7%.

Next step

Is AI recommending your business?

Find out how visible you are across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews.

Almost a third of Google AI Mode's garage door answers (31.3%) carried a link straight to an online booking page. That's close to plumbing at 39.4% and HVAC at 38.9%, and far above pest control at 5.0% and roofing at 1.8%. Nothing like that happened on the other engines: ChatGPT and Gemini linked zero booking pages across all 32 questions, and Perplexity linked them in 0.2% of its answers. The software behind those pages is familiar: pooling every question we ask, Housecall Pro booking pages turned up in 20.5% of Google AI Mode's answers, ServiceTitan pages in 10.6% and Jobber pages in 3.1%.

We think those links come from the booking link on each business's Google Business Profile, though our data records the URL, not where Google found it. If that's right, the setting matters, and it's a manual one. Google's help page says a profile can hold "up to 10 links per category," then adds: "Local business links are not available via the Business Profile API or spreadsheet upload." For a 60-branch garage door brand, that's 60 profiles someone edits by hand and rechecks whenever the scheduling software changes. Each link should open that branch's own calendar, and our guide to a removed or broken booking link covers what goes wrong.

Cheers Market Baseline, August 31 to September 20, 2026: answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode to 32 home-services questions in 100 US and Canadian metros. Garage door repair is one question. Ratings are Google AI Mode card figures as displayed; national brands counted as a category.

Garage door companies named by Google AI Mode had a median of 280 Google reviews; 0.6% showed under 4.0 stars, 23.4% of answers named a company with under 20 reviews, 40.6% of answers named a national franchise brand, and a national brand was named first in 18.0%.

Garage door companies in Google AI Mode's answers carried more reviews than the roofers or electricians it named: a median of 280, at 4.9 stars. A fifth of them (20.3%) had 1,000 or more, yet 23.4% of AI Mode's garage door answers still named at least one company with fewer than 20. The rating floor was tight, with 86.1% at 4.8 or higher and 0.6% under 4.0. Gemini's cards agreed, with a median of 289 reviews and 1.9% under 4.0 stars.

National franchise brands appeared in 40.6% of garage door answers across the four engines and filled 13.0% of the business names; one was named first in 18.0% of answers. That's well below pest control at 60.1% and far above roofing at 0.9%. In four garage door answers out of ten, a local company shared the answer with at least one national name.

Price and licensing hardly came up: a dollar figure appeared in 5.7% of ChatGPT's garage door answers and 0.7% of Google AI Mode's, licensing or insurance in 6.0% and 7.3%. Warranties came up far more, in 70.7% of ChatGPT's answers and 60.3% of Gemini's, which makes spring and opener warranty terms worth a line on every branch page.

This week, branch by branch

  • For your top ten metros, open the Expertise.com, Angi and BBB pages ChatGPT cites for garage door repair and correct each branch's name, phone, service area and services.
  • Check every Business Profile's booking link by hand and make sure it opens that branch's own calendar, not a national form.
  • Put real hours, same-day repair cutoffs and spring and opener warranty terms on each branch page and profile.
  • Ask every repair customer for a Google review before the technician leaves the driveway.

Methodology

Every week, Cheers asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the same 32 home-services questions in 100 metro areas across the United States and Canada, and records every business each engine names, with its star rating, review count and map position where the engine shows one, and every source it cites. This analysis covers the three weeks from August 31 to September 20, 2026: 34,742 usable answers (9,434 from ChatGPT, 9,435 from Google AI Mode, 9,364 from Gemini and 6,509 from Perplexity) across 60 US and 40 Canadian metros. We excluded empty or cut-off answers, most of them from a Perplexity collection outage. Each question was asked once per city per week, so week-to-week changes include normal answer-to-answer variation. Business names were extracted automatically; a hand check of 40 answers found the extraction caught about three in four of the businesses a reader would count, so counts are lower bounds. Star ratings and review counts are the figures each engine displayed; for ChatGPT and Gemini we captured them from September 18 and September 14 onward. Findings describe associations in this sample, not how any engine ranks businesses.

Garage door repair is one of the 32 questions: "who are the best garage door repair companies?" It drew 300 answers each from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini and 296 from Perplexity. Google AI Mode's rating figures cover 1,183 rated appearances in 278 answers and Gemini's cover 475 in 135 answers from September 14 to 22; ChatGPT's garage door cards were too few to publish. Gemini citation shares use the 166 garage door answers where its citations were captured. National brands are counted from an internal list and never named. The same-day, spring and opener mention rates, and Google AI Mode's Expertise.com rate on this question, are extra counts we ran on September 23, 2026 over the same answers with the same exclusions. Frequently Asked Questions

Mainly through directories. On the Cheers Market Baseline's garage door repair question, ChatGPT cited Expertise.com in 57.0% of its answers, Angi or HomeAdvisor in 47.0% and BBB in 46.0%, and a company's own website in only 13.3%. Google AI Mode worked the other way, citing company websites in 90.0% of its answers.

Google AI Mode linked an online booking page in 31.3% of its garage door answers, and ChatGPT never did. Google says Business Profile booking links can't be set through the Business Profile API or spreadsheet upload, so a multi-location brand has to set and check them profile by profile.

Only where dispatch honors it. Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini mentioned 24/7 or after-hours service in 74.3% to 82.3% of their garage door answers, well above their rates on other service questions, so honest hours and same-day cutoffs belong on every branch page and Business Profile.

They show up often without taking over. National franchise brands appeared in 40.6% of garage door answers across four engines and filled 13.0% of the business names, and one was named first in 18.0% of answers.
