BrightLocal and Semrush Local are 2 Yext alternatives worth evaluating for local listings management: BrightLocal separates citation cleanup from ongoing syncing, while Semrush combines distribution, duplicate monitoring and suggested edits in one tool. Their documentation, checked October 19, 2026, supports that shortlist. For a multi-location service brand, I would choose between them by testing the actual publishers and update workflow each branch needs.
A directory count alone will not make that decision. A plumbing branch needs its current phone number, service information and location page to reach the places customers use. Ask each vendor to demonstrate those exact records before changing your contract.

Listings shortlist
Choose by publisher and maintenance work
A global directory count is not your branch coverage list.
Best for: Pricing citation cleanup separately from ongoing sync
Strengths
- Pay-as-you-go Citation Builder
- Active Sync maintains key connected listings
Tradeoffs
- Yelp requires Active Sync Plus in the US or Canada
- Price manual corrections and continuing work separately
Best for: Managing distribution, duplicates and suggested edits together
Strengths
- Listing distribution with duplicate monitoring
- One place to accept or reject suggested edits
Tradeoffs
- Available publishers depend on geography
- Confirm underlying distributor if changing networks matters
Keep the narrower option visible
- Only Google Business Profile needs management: Consider direct dashboard management with a named owner.
- Several publishers must stay current: Agree on the transfer sequence first; verify live corrections after the new connection.

BrightLocal: separate cleanup from ongoing updates
BrightLocal offers two different jobs. Its Citation Builder and Active Sync guide describes Citation Builder as a pay-as-you-go service for creating and correcting listings. Active Sync Essential handles continuing updates on Google Business Profile, Facebook, Bing, and Apple Maps. Yelp management requires Active Sync Plus and is available only in the US and Canada.
I would put it on the shortlist when you want to price cleanup separately from continuing maintenance. Request an itemized proposal showing which publishers receive manual work, which stay connected for updates, and what later changes cost. Treat those as separate deliverables when comparing the proposal with your existing agreement.
Semrush Local: manage distribution and exceptions together
Semrush's Listing Management documentation describes automatic distribution, duplicate monitoring and a place to accept or reject suggested edits. Its directory catalog contains more than 100 publishers globally; the list available to a particular location depends on geography.
That makes it a candidate for a team that wants one working queue for listings and exceptions. Ask for the publisher list for your actual locations, then have the vendor demonstrate a correction and a duplicate case. If leaving a particular distribution network is part of your reason for moving, confirm the proposed service's underlying provider in writing.
A global catalog is a starting point for procurement. Your acceptance sheet should name the publishers each branch needs and the person responsible when an update fails.
Direct Google management covers a narrower job
You can also keep Google Business Profile management inside your own operating workflow. Google's location-data documentation describes reading and updating location records, including retrieving Google's version of a record. A custom API integration requires an application and OAuth credentials. Ordinary edits in the Business Profile dashboard do not require you to build that integration.
That can cover a Google-specific requirement, but it leaves the rest of your publisher list to be managed separately. I would consider it only when someone on the team owns that continuing work. A spreadsheet with no maintenance owner will not answer an acquired branch's next phone-number change.

Agree on the handoff before cancelling
Choose a small pilot that includes a straightforward branch and one with an existing listing problem. Save the current public listing URLs, approved business details and account-access information in your own records. Ask the incoming provider to identify which profiles it will connect, which require manual work and who handles unresolved conflicts.
The sequence depends on the provider. Semrush's transfer instructions require cancelling Yext before switching to Semrush. Export your existing listings and agree on the connection steps before cancellation. If you need an earlier live trial, use a location that is not managed by the outgoing provider.
After the incoming service connects the location, test a legitimate update that the branch needs. Check the public listing and its destination page after the provider reports completion. Record differences and assign an owner to each open issue before expanding.
Ask both providers what happens at cancellation, including which connections end and which account access your team retains. Confirm the sequence for transferring control so two services do not compete to update the same record. Compare the total first-year cost, including cleanup and internal staff time, at the same location count.
Listing accuracy and AI visibility need separate measurements. If AI discovery is also part of your buying decision, record a baseline with the Cheers AI Visibility Grader. Use that as an observation to revisit, not a promise that changing listings software will produce recommendations.
