ChatGPT can help a customer reach your business through the phone number in an answer, a connected app or a cloud browser that fills a quote or booking form. As of November 1, 2026, OpenAI's help page routes the former agent mode's browser tasks into ChatGPT Work. Prepare those current paths, and review any custom GPT before its scheduled December 11 retirement.

OpenAI's agents and local services, as of Nov. 1, 2026

  • ChatGPT agent mode: "no longer available," with no end date given. Nobody can use it, and browser tasks moved to the cloud browser (OpenAI help page).
  • Atlas browser: retired, so nobody can use it (OpenAI help page).
  • Cloud browser in ChatGPT Work: live on paid plans other than Go, in supported regions. It fills forms and can request quotes, it's designed to ask before confirming a booking or payment, and sites can block it (OpenAI help page).
  • dots: rolling out since Sept. 29 to Pro and Business Premium, plus an admin-enabled beta for Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare. Each gets its own cloud computer, browser and app connections for work tasks, with no documented calls to businesses (OpenAI launch post).
  • Get Quote: a beta with approved partners, for businesses an approved partner plugin lists. It opens the partner's quote form inside ChatGPT, for quote requests, not booking (OpenAI developer spec).
  • Sponsored Agents: a limited alpha since Sept. 16 for selected advertisers; it opens from an ad, and the advertiser's own agent chats with the person (OpenAI help page).
  • ChatGPT Ads: paid placement, live in 89 countries as of Oct. 21 and shown only on Free and Go (OpenAI post).
  • Custom GPTs: scheduled to retire Dec. 11 on all plans, or Feb. 11, 2027 for FedRAMP workspaces and affected Enterprise workspaces with a qualifying, approved deferral. Custom actions don't transfer (OpenAI help page).

What happened to ChatGPT agent mode

OpenAI retired Atlas on a schedule and agent mode without one. On July 9 it announced ChatGPT Work and an Aug. 9 end for the Atlas browser, as MacRumors reported. OpenAI hasn't dated agent mode's end; The Rundown, a third-party tracker, listed it as replaced by ChatGPT Work on Aug. 30.

The agent page now sends browser tasks to the cloud browser, which OpenAI says can "enter information into forms" and "request quotes from businesses." So a ChatGPT that fills in your quote form still exists inside ChatGPT Work, and any guide that tests forms in agent mode is out of date.

Where a homeowner's ChatGPT reaches you now

Every ChatGPT user gets the ordinary answer. In the Cheers Market Baseline, 12.6% of US ChatGPT local answers carried at least one phone number from Oct. 2 to 8, 2026, and 92.5% did from Oct. 9 to 31. Sistrix dates a new answer layout to the night of Oct. 8 to 9, though its post doesn't mention phone numbers.

The number isn't always one your own site shows. Of the US numbers ChatGPT printed in October that we could check against each business's website, 17.6% weren't on the site, and none of the confirmed nonmatches matched the single-digit or transposition errors we checked, which is why step 1 below is a phone check.

The cloud browser depends on the plan: by OpenAI's rules, accounts that can see ChatGPT ads (Free and Go) don't get it, and accounts that get it don't see ads, so ChatGPT ads for a multi-location brand reach only the plans without it. The one gap is the desktop app's built-in browser, which opens inside Work or Codex chats; OpenAI includes Codex on every plan and doesn't say which plans get that browser.

  • ChatGPT ads can show; OpenAI says only these plans get them
  • Sponsored Agents open from an ad, in a limited alpha

Read from OpenAI's help pages and posts on Nov. 1, 2026; rollout varies by region and workspace. The desktop app's built-in browser opens inside Work or Codex chats, OpenAI includes Codex on every plan, Free and Go too, and its help page doesn't say which plans get the built-in browser.

How ChatGPT's cloud browser gets to your quote form

OpenAI says each website decides whether to let the cloud browser in. It signs its requests (Web Bot Auth, RFC 9421), so a firewall can tell it from a scraper borrowing its name, though per OpenAI's allowlisting page Akamai and HUMAN still list it as "ChatGPT Agent" and Cloudflare's WAF rule search finds it as "ChatGPT Operator" (detection ID 129220581). Robots.txt is a separate setting; which AI crawlers to allow covers OpenAI's crawler tokens.

Once it's in, it fills your quote form the way a person does, so the checks in can AI agents book appointments from your website apply directly. When it gets stuck, OpenAI says it "will ask you to take over the cloud browser," and that "you" is the homeowner, finishing your form by hand.

Your form might never see the request. OpenAI says ChatGPT may use a connected app or plugin when one can do the task directly, so a marketplace's app can take a "get me three quotes" request; Angi, for one, has an app in ChatGPT that homeowners choose to add.

When we read US home-service contractor homepages on Nov. 1, at least 12.0% loaded a scheduler or online request form, and a CAPTCHA script loaded on 30.9% of re-fetched homepages with a form. Step 5 tests whether the cloud browser can complete that path on your site.

Microsoft Clarity's study of 5.2 million agentic sessions found a submit-form event in 19.85% of them, close to the 18.56% for human sessions. Prepare the form for that traffic and confirm that every accepted request reaches the office.

Dots launched for work, with a browser of their own

OpenAI launched dots on Sept. 29, 2026, as "always-on agents," each with its own cloud computer and browser and the ability to "connect to over 4,000 apps." Every example in the launch post is a work task, from a bug in Slack to an invoice sent after approval.

I'd just described Meta's Muse when I said this in a founder video we run on Meta, recorded after dots launched:

OpenAI answered with their own agent, dots, on September 29th. There's this saying in tech every time one of these new AI tools comes out that says, this is the worst they're ever going to be. And there's something to be said about that.

The point is the direction of travel. We believe capable personal assistants will become a normal way people get things done, including researching and arranging local services. Dots launched around work tasks, with their own browser and app connections; Muse approaches the broader personal-assistant use case. For a service business, both are reasons to make information and request paths ready for software acting on a customer's behalf.

Dots' current access is ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets, plus an admin-enabled beta for Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare. Their documented route to a business is through browser and app workflows; the launch material does not describe outbound business phone calls.

Get Quote and Sponsored Agents are partner tests

OpenAI's Get Quote spec still called these plugins "currently in beta and being tested with approved partners" on Nov. 1. The partner is a plugin provider, not your company, and our Get Quote readiness guide covers the business feed it expects.

Sponsored Agents let a person chat with an advertiser's own agent from an ad, in what OpenAI calls "a limited alpha test," and Angi said it's in the pilot. What ChatGPT Sponsored Agents are covers how to watch for one in your markets.

If you built a custom GPT, Dec. 11 is the deadline

OpenAI's retirement FAQ says that on Dec. 11 "custom GPTs and their GPT pages become inaccessible," and that the change "affects all ChatGPT plans."

Instructions, knowledge files and connected apps can migrate to a plugin, but custom actions don't transfer, and OpenAI says rebuilding one "may require a custom MCP server and technical setup." A GPT that only restated your website loses nothing, while one with a booking or quote action breaks unless someone does that work.

Decide which functions to carry forward before migrating. Preserve useful instructions and knowledge, plan a replacement for any booking action, and move public links to the supported destination. Review the migration behavior first: OpenAI says the original becomes read-only and cannot then be deleted by its creator.

Before Dec. 11

Move a service brand's custom GPT workflow in five steps

  1. 01This week

    Find it

Search the GPT store for your brand, open My GPTs in the account that built it, and ask each agency

  2. 02

    List its actions

Write down every booking, quote or lookup it calls; custom actions don't transfer

  3. 03

    Decide

Move useful quote, booking or lookup tasks to a supported workflow and test each connection

  4. 04

    Point people home

Swap links to the GPT for the location page and that location's phone number

  5. 05By Dec. 11

    Let it retire

Confirm the replacement works before retirement; keep a record of the instructions and actions you need

A Cheers recommendation built on OpenAI's retirement FAQ, not an OpenAI requirement. Past conversations with a custom GPT stay readable after it retires.

  1. Five-step custom GPT retirement checklist for home-service brands
  2. 1. Find it: Search the GPT store for your brand, open My GPTs in the account that built it, and ask each agency
  3. 2. List its actions: Write down every booking, quote or lookup it calls; custom actions don't transfer
  4. 3. Decide: Move useful quote, booking or lookup tasks to a supported workflow and test each connection

What to do, by deadline

Add agent readiness to each brand's lead plan. These six steps connect the current ChatGPT products to the branch's actual contact and booking workflow.

This week

  • Step 1: Ask ChatGPT for your service in each priority location's town, the way a homeowner would, and check the number it prints against that location's page and Business Profile. Screenshot both for whoever fixes a mismatch. To see what AI answers say about your company first, run Cheers' free AI visibility check.
  • Step 2: Ask whoever runs your firewall or CDN whether it blocks ChatGPT's cloud browser, and decide on purpose. If you allow it, allow the signed identity, never a user-agent string anyone can copy, and keep bot checks on logins, payment pages and customer accounts.
  • Step 3: Find any custom GPT carrying your brand's name: search the GPT store, open My GPTs in the account that built it, and ask each agency. Write down every custom action (a booking call, a quote form, a schedule lookup), because those don't transfer.
  • Step 4: Ask your marketplaces and your scheduling or field-service vendor whether they have a ChatGPT app, a Get Quote plugin or a Sponsored Agent, and whether those requests land at your branch or in their lead queue.

This month

Step 5 is one test. Tell the CSR team to expect the leads and mark them as tests, since an agent's form fill looks like any other web lead, then ask ChatGPT Work, on a paid plan other than Go, to request a quote from two of your location pages. Note where it stops (a CAPTCHA, a ZIP-code popup, a form that resets, a hand-back to you) and whether the confirmation screen names the service and branch.

Before Dec. 11

Step 6 is to choose a supported destination for every "book with us" or "get a quote" GPT. If it only restates the website, send visitors to the location page and booking route. If it performs a useful action, assign someone to rebuild that action through a supported integration and test the resulting office record before switching the links in emails, the website and social profiles.

Method

The Cheers Market Baseline is our own research panel: every week it asks ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini the same 32 home-service questions in 100 metro areas, 60 in the US and 40 in Canada. This article uses US ChatGPT answers only, 1,910 from Oct. 2 to 8 and 6,307 from Oct. 9 to 31, 2026; 5,835 of those 6,307 carried at least one phone number. A phone number means a North American number pattern in the answer text, and finding one doesn't tell you it's the right number or that anyone called it.

The not-on-the-site share is 66 of 374. Those are the US numbers we could check against each business's own website, out of 900 we sampled from ChatGPT's October answers, and a number counts as missing when it didn't appear in the pages we checked. We read every mismatch by hand.

The homepage figures come from our Nov. 1 read of 1,096 US home-service contractor websites drawn from Google's local map results, with Cheers customers removed. It used raw HTML without running JavaScript, so its presence rates are floors, and sent no quote requests. Of the 976 readable homepages, 117 loaded a scheduler or online request form; 48.3% had a form of any kind, search and newsletter boxes included.

We re-fetched 922 homepages for the CAPTCHA check. A CAPTCHA script loaded on 133 of the 430 with a form, and on 16.8% of all 922.

The session figures are Microsoft Clarity's, not ours, from 230,511 Clarity projects between Aug. 13 and Sept. 9, 2026. In that study 8.42% of agentic sessions included a book-appointment event. Events overlap, and an event doesn't show a task was finished.

We don't know how many home-service brands built a custom GPT; nothing in our sales calls or research counts them.

We read OpenAI's pages on Nov. 1, 2026, and several had changed in the two weeks before. The built-in browser's missing plan list comes from OpenAI's built-in browser page, and dots' plan rollout and the admin-enabled beta, "off by default," from its DevDay recap. OpenAI's Oct. 21 ads post says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week without saying how many pay, so nobody outside OpenAI can size the cloud-browser side. PPC Land also described ChatGPT Work taking over Atlas's browsing.

Frequently Asked Questions

OpenAI's help center now says "ChatGPT agent is no longer available." It sends longer, multi-step tasks to ChatGPT Work and browser tasks to ChatGPT's cloud browser, which runs on paid plans other than Go, in supported regions. OpenAI hasn't published the date agent mode ended; a third-party tracker, The Rundown, listed it as replaced by Aug. 30, 2026.

ChatGPT's cloud browser can fill a quote or booking form on supported sites and is designed to ask the customer before confirming a booking or payment. Keep your form accessible and test the full request and confirmation path. The separate Get Quote beta opens an approved partner's quote form inside ChatGPT.

Dots are always-on agents OpenAI launched Sept. 29, 2026 for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets, each with its own cloud computer and browser. The only calls OpenAI's launch post describes are people calling or voice-chatting with their own dot, and as of Nov. 1, 2026, OpenAI documents no calls to businesses from dots or the cloud browser.

It's scheduled to retire that day, when custom GPTs and their GPT pages become inaccessible, on all ChatGPT plans. FedRAMP workspaces and affected Enterprise workspaces with a qualifying, approved deferral have until Feb. 11, 2027. Instructions, knowledge files and connected apps can move to a plugin, but custom actions, like a booking or quote connection, don't transfer, and rebuilding one may require a custom MCP server.

Keep public service, quote and booking pages accessible to customers using ChatGPT's cloud browser. Work with the firewall vendor to recognize its signed identity, and test the form through to confirmation. Maintain the appropriate controls on customer accounts and payment pages.
