ChatGPT uses Yelp reviews mostly on its map: in October 2026, about four in ten business cards on its US maps linked to Yelp in the Cheers Market Baseline, our own research panel. Since October 7 its sources list Yelp too. That matters because the Yelp card is the one with fewer stars: matched business by business, those cards averaged 4.34 stars where Google AI Mode showed the same businesses at 4.89.

From October 2 to 6, 43.2% of business cards on ChatGPT's US maps linked to Yelp, after 46.4% from September 18 to 22, the only earlier window we measured; from October 9 to 31 it held at 40.9%.
The sources barely registered it: of the 1,306 US answers that showed a map and listed sources in those early October days, 85.9% had a Yelp-linked card and just 2 listed Yelp as a source.

None of 244 US answers listed Yelp on October 6. On October 7, 27 of 257 did, 25 of them through a quote-request page, and on October 8, a one-day peak, 257 of 258 did, 246 through a quote-request page. From October 9 to 31 every day landed between 25.0% and 40.7%, or 34.4% for the period.
Sistrix dated two other changes that week in a study of ChatGPT answers in general, not Yelp or local ones (Sistrix, October 30, 2026): GPT-6 began rolling out on October 7, and ChatGPT moved to a block layout overnight on October 8 to 9. Our links per answer went from 5.2 on October 7 to 16.2 on October 8, so the first Yelp links came before the jump. We don't know what brought Yelp back.
Most of those Yelp links point to a business already on the map: from October 20 to 31, 77.0% of Yelp business-page links in the sources went to a business on that answer's own Yelp card. Since the block layout gives each business its own block, Yelp's share of the sources reflects the layout as much as ChatGPT choosing Yelp. Quote-request links fell to 4.1% of US answers from October 9 to 31.
Counting Angi and HomeAdvisor as one site, Yelp was the eighth most-listed site in US ChatGPT answers across October at 30.3%, including the days before it came back. Angi or HomeAdvisor led at 69.4%, and Thumbtack (29.9%) and BBB (20.1%) trailed Yelp.

Per 100 ChatGPT answers, US and Canada together, the number that cited Yelp ran 30.8 and 24.9 in the weeks of July 6 and 13. It then sat near zero from the week of July 20 through September 28 (1.2, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4, 0.2, 0.3, 0.3, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.0), before October came in at 27.9, 26.4 and 25.3.
Yelp's drop came in the week Axios reported its licensing deal with OpenAI, while Expertise.com, Reddit and Angi or HomeAdvisor lost far less. We can't see ChatGPT's cards that far back, so the timing fits Yelp's data moving off the source list and onto the map without proving it.
By share of answers, October puts Yelp about where it stood in early July, but answers now carry about five times as many links: about 23 each from October 9 to 31 against 4.6 from August 31 to September 20. Yelp is a much smaller slice of what ChatGPT lists than that share suggests.
Google AI Mode went the other way, from 43.8 answers citing Yelp per 100 (July 6 to August 17) to 19.9 (August 24 to October 19), possibly a change in how Google exposes links; Yelp was still in 26.3% of US AI Mode answers in October. Reddit's fall in the same counts is in Reddit Fell Out of ChatGPT's Local Answers in August 2026.

The lead's averages compare each business with itself: 1,252 businesses on Yelp-linked US ChatGPT cards that also showed up on Google AI Mode in the same city, October 20 to 31. On ChatGPT 21.5% of them sat under 4.0 stars, against 2 of the 1,252 on Google AI Mode, and 42.6% came out half a star or more lower. The median ChatGPT card carried about 40 reviews, against about 490 on Google AI Mode.
ChatGPT's other cards look nothing like that: their 1,255 matched businesses averaged 4.91 stars on both engines, and 98.7% landed within 0.1 star of each other.
September's match in Why ChatGPT Shows a Lower Star Rating Than Google found 4.3 against 4.9; October's rounds to the same.
Why would the same business score lower? Google lets a business ask every customer for a review, while Yelp tells businesses not to ask anyone, so a branch hears from far more customers on Google and thin Yelp counts swing harder. Yelp also says its software tries to identify requested reviews and not recommend them, and reviews it doesn't recommend don't count toward the star rating. Our data shows the gap, not the reason.
BrightLocal found that 42% of people who used AI for local business recommendations always check the review site itself (BrightLocal, March 10, 2026). When a branch's ChatGPT card links to Yelp, that review site is the branch's Yelp page, one tap away.
Your review reputation travels into AI answers
In our ad, the "exact same signals" line makes the practical case for this work: the reviews, business facts and third-party pages that shape local reputation also show up in AI answers. Our October results make that visible. ChatGPT's Yelp-linked cards showed Yelp ratings, while its other matched cards closely reflected the ratings in Google AI Mode.
That is why we work on the whole branch reputation. Build a steady Google review programme, maintain the Yelp page under Yelp's rules and keep the business facts consistent across both. The rating displayed can differ by source, so inspect the actual answer your customer sees.
Google's help page on local ranking says prominence draws on "how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have," without saying whose reviews (Google Business Profile Help).

How Yelp reaches ChatGPT customers
Axios reported on July 23 that Yelp licenses its reviews, ratings and other business information to OpenAI, non-exclusively (MarTech, July 28, 2026). On August 6 Yelp told shareholders its ratings and reviews "recently began powering ChatGPT's local experience in relevant categories" and called its Request-a-Quote integration with ChatGPT "coming soon" (Yelp Q2 2026 letter).
The same letter cites a Yelp-commissioned study that found Yelp the most organically cited home-services platform in US AI answers in Q4 2025, with 3.4 times the AI citations of the next platform. In our October ChatGPT answers Angi or HomeAdvisor led instead, and both can be true: that study counted raw citations on four engines, with Angi and HomeAdvisor separate, while we count the share of answers that list a site.
Yelp told TechCrunch it "doesn't permit non-human traffic on its platform" unless the agent comes through its paid data licensing program (TechCrunch, October 6, 2026). Search answers still link Yelp pages, Google AI Mode's included.
A link to a Yelp quote-request page isn't evidence that anyone can request a quote inside ChatGPT. Yelp hasn't said whether its Request-a-Quote will run through ChatGPT's Get Quote beta; how that flow works is in ChatGPT Get Quote: Home-Services Readiness Guide.
Yelp's next shareholder letter comes with third-quarter results after the market close on November 5 (Yelp Investor Relations, October 22, 2026), and that's where to look for whether Request-a-Quote runs inside ChatGPT yet.
What to do
- Run the ten-branch check from Why ChatGPT Shows a Lower Star Rating Than Google this week, or with one shop, for each town you serve. In the ChatGPT phone app, ask each branch's trade-and-city question, open the map, and log whether the branch shows up, whether its card links to Yelp, the card's rating and the Google rating. Add columns for whether the sources list Yelp and whether that link goes to the branch's Yelp page or a quote-request page. Fix first the branches whose card sits half a star or more under their Google rating, and rerun the check monthly.
- Fix the Yelp page for every branch whose card links to Yelp: claim, correct, reply, report only reviews that break Yelp's rules (never one just because it's negative), and don't ask anyone for reviews.
- Keep the facts an agent needs (hours, services, service area and the number that reaches the branch) current on your own site and Google Business Profile, and call each number once to make sure it rings the right branch. If the card shows the wrong branch, an old address or a closed location, use the correction steps in How Do I Fix Wrong Business Information in ChatGPT?
- Name the person who answers Yelp quote requests at each branch and the response time you'll hold them to. ChatGPT already links Yelp's quote-request pages in some answers, so don't wait for Yelp's next letter; how Yelp Assistant quote requests reach a branch is in How Do Home Services Get Recommended by Yelp Assistant?
Method
Every week the Cheers Market Baseline asks ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini the same 32 home-service questions in 100 metros, 60 in the US and 40 in Canada; the smallest US city has about 300,000 people, so it doesn't speak for small towns. US answers per engine: 1,910 from October 2 to 8 and 6,307 from October 9 to 31. Perplexity isn't in this edition; Gemini listed Yelp in 0.0% of its answers with sources, but we capture only part of them.
A map card counts as Yelp-linked when it links to a Yelp business page or is tagged as Yelp's: 3,074 of 7,109 US cards from October 2 to 6 and 8,486 of 20,761 from October 9 to 31. On October 8 none of the 1,311 US cards carried a link or tag, so that day has no Yelp card count; on October 9 we captured cards for only 29 of 250 US answers, and we can't see cards before September 18.
Source shares count US answers with at least one captured source, by the day the answer came back: 6,304 for October 9 to 31, 8,100 for October and 8,179 for Google AI Mode. Card, link-count and rating figures, and the 1,306-answer comparison, use the day the question was asked. The weekly series counts answers, not links (US and Canada together, 2,992 to 3,288 ChatGPT answers a week), adding yelp.com, m.yelp.com and yelp.ca, and Angi and HomeAdvisor, so an answer citing two of those domains counts twice.
Matching pairs the same normalized business name in the same city on both engines, October 20 to 31, averaging each engine's ratings. Names that differ don't match, so 1,252 of 2,410 businesses on Yelp-linked cards made it in, and 1,255 of 3,192 on other cards, across all 60 US cities. The overlap share uses 2,158 Yelp business-page links.
We collected answers the same way on both sides of every change here, which narrows the explanations but can't rule out a capture change; no number here proves a cause or is a customer result, and no business is named.
